En plein air is a French expression which means ''in the open air & is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Working in natural light became particularly important in the mid 1800s, especially to what became known as the Barbizon school & later to the Impressionist painters.
The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes, a modern invention ( by an American artist ) which gave artists unheard of freedom.
''Landscape'' & ''scenery'' r generic terms that indicate the subject matter of a painting, while en plein air gives u an idea of the technique & the period of the work as well,
To sum up, en plein air indicates most definitely that the artist was present on the scene, & therefore that the work was not done from a picture.
